Obituary of Alice Marie Davenport Whaley
Please share a memory of Alice Marie to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.
“For I am now ready to be offered, and the time of my departure is at hand. I have fought a good fight, I have finished my course, I have kept the faith. Henceforth there is laid up for me a crown of righteousness, which the Lord, the righteous judge, shall give me at that day.
II Timothy 4:6-8
Mrs. Alice Marie Davenport Whaley departed this life on Thursday, December 11, 2025, at 9:11 p.m. at St. Francis Medical Center in Monroe, Louisiana, leaving behind a legacy marked by resilience, unity, and strength. This is best reflected in the coincidence of her birth on 9/11 and passing at 9:11 p.m., a testament to her enduring qualities.
She was born to the proud parents of Ralph Otto and Vallie Davenport on September 11, 1942. She had three siblings who preceded her in death and has two remaining siblings.
She was married to John Edward Whaley who preceded her in death, and also a sweet baby girl she named Nevelyn.
She accepted Christ at an early age where she was a member of Mt. Calvary Baptist Church, then at St. Matthews No. 1 Missionary Baptist Church in Mer Rouge, and in her later years, she converted to the Catholic Church, St. Joseph in Bastrop, Louisiana.
She received her early education at St. Matthews Elementary School and later pursued her High School diploma at Delta High School.
She was a retired tailor and was great at her skills. She worked at Jordache for several years. In her spare time, she made beautiful outfits and was well known for her gifted talent. She later worked at Kiddie Kollege Day Care, a family business until her health declined.
She was a resolute person, an industrious worker, and always shared her last with others. She did not have a selfish bone in her body as she had great intentions in making sure everyone else was taken care of before herself. She took enjoyment of making sure her children, grandchildren, and great grandchildren did not want or need anything.
Her passion was reading books, sewing, eating ice cream, and cookies. She always took out the time before nightfall to walk from her home on Wilmot Highway to the Village of Mer Rouge just to see the familiar faces daily. She had to do this before night because she always expressed, “I’m afraid of the dark!”
Preceding her in death are her parents, Ralph Otto and Vallie Davenport; her daughter, Nevelyn; sisters, Rachel King and Lula Mae Smith (Ivory); brother, Norwood Spencer; and husband, John Edward Whaley.
Left to cherish Alice’s memories are her daughters, Rosalind and Shannon Whaley of Bastrop, Louisiana; son, Darrell Edward Whaley of Monroe, Louisiana; grandchildren, Cortney McCray, KaJuan Whaley, Michaela Whaley, and DeCario Whaley (Rocsheka). In her memories were her darling great grands, Omarious Taylor, Ta'Mia Whaley, Mayjer Whaley, Nevelyn Whaley, and Carter Logan. She leaves behind a sister, Wilma Davenport, and a brother, Ralph Davenport (Shelia) and a host of nieces, nephews, relatives, and close friends to celebrate her life and transition to her eternal home.
A time of visitation honoring Mrs. Alice Whaley will be held on Friday, December 19, 2025, from 5 p.m. until 7 p.m. at Golden Funeral Home in Bastrop, Louisiana.
