Julie Carolyn Jackson Ostteen, a member of Harmony Baptist Church, passed away Saturday, February 21, 2026, at the age of eighty-six. She loved the Lord with all her heart and prayed daily for her children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren. “Miss Julie” was also a “momma” to many of her kids’ friends over the years. They were always welcome around her “round table” for food, fellowship, laughter, and words of wisdom.
Julie worked as society editor of the Bastrop Daily Enterprise for several years under Nathan Bolton. She was blessed with a wonderful ability to write beautiful, descriptive articles about weddings, showers, and parties that pleased everyone in the Morehouse Parish area.
After she left the Enterprise, Julie worked in medical records at Morehouse General Hospital, retiring in 1989. After her retirement, she really enjoyed cooking for others and even wrote a cookbook which she shared with family and friends. Julie also wrote a book of stories from her childhood for her family entitled, “The Sharecropper’s Daughter.”
She is survived by her husband of sixty-nine years, Carlton Ostteen, Jr.; children, Michael Eugene Ostteen (Donna), Janet Reneau Ostteen Whitehead, and Nancy Carl Ostteen Patrick (Barry); honorary daughter, Barbie Johnson; sister, Dorothy Jackson McKean; grandchildren, Laura Ostteen, Carlton Whitehead, Dylan Patrick, Julie Claire Patrick Brown; five great-grandchildren, and numerous nieces and nephews.
Mrs. Ostteen is preceded in death by her parents, James Theodore Jackson and Willie Lee “Sue” Pitts Jackson; siblings, Charles Ray Jackson, Bobbie Ruth Schwartz, Billie Gene Jackson, William Austin Jackson, Georgia Claire Jackson Manno, Calvin Wesley Jackson; and son-in-law, Tom Whitehead.
