Please share a memory of Betty Lou to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.
Betty Lou Whitener, M.D., passed away peacefully on May 13, 2026, after a life marked by dedication, intelligence, compassion, adventure, and servitude to her patients. Born on January 20, 1930, in Wewoka, Oklahoma, Betty was the beloved daughter of Thomas Farris Whitener and Golden Elizabeth Gatewood Whitener. A gifted student from an early age, Betty graduated from high school in Shawnee, Oklahoma, before pursuing her lifelong dream of becoming a physician. In 1954, she graduated at the top of her class from the University of Oklahoma College of Medicine, an extraordinary accomplishment during a time when few women entered the medical profession. Following medical school, Dr. Whitener completed her internship in Honolulu, where she developed a lasting appreciation for travel and new experiences. After leaving Hawaii, she began her medical practice in Oak Ridge, Louisiana, before continuing her work in Mer Rouge. Over the course of an extraordinary 60-year career as a general practitioner, Dr. Whitener devoted herself wholeheartedly to the care of her patients and community. She was respected not only for her medical knowledge, but also for her straightforward nature, sharp wit, and honest approach to both medicine and life. Outside of medicine, Betty's greatest joys were found on her land, where she passionately raised cattle and embraced the beauty and hard work of rural life. She raised registered Beefmaster cattle and won many awards for her outstanding Beefmaster bulls. In addition to her cattle, Betty also loved riding and caring for her horses and enjoyed deer hunting, where she was well known for always bringing home the biggest buck. Betty also loved to travel and took every opportunity to see the world, always eager for new places, people, and experiences. Dr. Betty Lou Whitener leaves behind a legacy of service, strength, intelligence, and compassion that touched countless lives. She will be remembered with deep love, admiration, and gratitude by all who knew her. We would like to express heartfelt thanks to lifelong friends, Mike Barham, George Young, Johnnie Kelly, caregivers, Lavita Brown and Stacy Glover, and her most beloved caregiver, Regina Lewis, for their constant love, friendship, compassionate care, and exceptional nursing skills during Betty's final chapter in life. In lieu of flowers the family requests that donations be made to Oklahoma University Medical.
