Hazel Watts Doss quietly departed this life for her heavenly home on December 27, 2005 at Summerlin Lane Nursing Home. She was 93 years old.
Services will be Friday, December 30, 2005 at 10:00 AM under the direction of Golden Funeral Home with the Rev. Johnny Sanders officiating, assisted by Rev. Jimmy Yocum. Interment will follow in Memorial Park Cemetery. Visitation will be Thursday, December 29 from 5 - 9 PM. Pallbearers will be family members Stephen Best, Eric Johnson, Tony Waller, Richard Miller, Hal Watts and Mark Gray. Honorary pallbearer is Robin Cox.
Born on September 30, 1912, Hazel was the first child of J.C. and Lucy Watts. As the oldest, she helped raise her brothers, Willie, Johnny and Lee Watts and her sisters, Laura Bell Simmons and Odell Watts. Her marriage to Clemmon Mathews produced her children Estelle Mathews Harrison, Johnny A. "Buddy" Mathews and Donald Ray Mathews. After her children were grown Hazel Married the love of her life, William Harold Doss and became mother to his toddler children, Nancy and Linda. She continued to raise children, grandchildren and great-grands until she could no longer take care of herself.
Hazel was preceded in death by her parents, brothers and sisters, her daughter Estelle and two infant grandchildren, her son "Buddy" who gave his life for his country in the Korean Conflict and grandson, Scotty Gentry.
Left to cherish the memory of her pioneer spirit, sweet smile and loving heart are son and wife, Donald and Cleda Mathews of Red Oak, Tx, step-daughters Nancy Doss Freeland and Linda Doss Middleton, son-in-law Ray Harrison. Grandchildren by blood or marriage were all the same in Hazel's heart and are Rita Harrison Johnson, Connie R. Harrison, Debra Harrison Gray, Penny Mathews Miller, Johnny Wayne Mathews, Danny Ray Mathews LaNell Waller Wassom,LaDonna Waller Bell, Tony Ray Waller, Shawn Gentry Reynolds, Denise Gentry Harrison and Sabrina Freeland Clay. Also surviving are more than 12 great-grandchildren and more than 12 great-great grandchildren, a host of special nieces and nephews including a very special niece, Brenda Simmons Douglas of Akien, SC.
She also leaves behind numerous friends and former co-workers who will remember her fondly from the days of "the Bag Plant", and when Morgan and Lindsey's and Snyder's were on the courtyard square.
Hazel was a faithful servant of God, who with her husband Harold led her family to worship and serve the Lord at Twin Oaks Baptist Church, formerly Westside Baptist Church.
The family wishes to express thier appreciation to Dr. Mike Smith and the stafff of Summerlin Lane Nursing Home and Premier Hospice for the tender loving care given to our sweet "Granny".
