Obituary of Thomas "Tommy" L. Rodgers

A celebration of life, for Mr. Thomas "Tommy" L. Rodgers, 74, of Bastrop, LA, is scheduled for 10 a.m. Saturday, October 3, 2009 at Grace Baptist Church. Officiating will be Rev. Chris Wright with interment following in Memorial Park Cemetery. Visitation will be held from 5 p.m. until 8 p.m. Friday at Golden Funeral Home. Mr. Rodgers, a retired employee of Louisiana Cotton Warehouse in Mer Rouge and member of Grace Baptist Church, passed away Wednesday, September 30, 2009. He served in the U.S. Army and was an avid golfer. Tommy had a special love for the youth of this parish, and was instrumental in making many improvements including the construction of Carter Park and the Dodson Park Gymnasium. He was a longtime coach for Peewee football and baseball. He also loved the Bastrop High School Rams and was the first to get a real "Sam the Ram" mascot for the school. Mr. Rodgers in survived by his wife, Joan Doughty Rodgers; three daughters, Vicki Gilly and husband Dickie of Bastrop, LA, Tammy Rodgers of Monroe, LA, Rhonda Thompson of Monroe, LA; son, Randy Rodgers and wife Carol of Bastrop, LA; Phillip Lester (whom is loved as a son) and wife April and son Caden of Bastrop, LA; brother, Bobby Rodgers and wife Claudia of Monroe, LA; brother and sister in law, Tommy and Betty Doughty; six grandchildren, Stacee Martin and husband Justin, Christy Gilly and fiance` Ed Lane; Lauren Ogles, Trevor Rodgers, Leigh Rodgers, Ty Thompson and several nieces and nephews. He is preceded in death by his parents, Jessie and Viola Rodgers and a sister, Emma Rodgers. Serving as pallbearers are: Donnie Tillman, Sammy Eldridge, Will Freeland, Johnathan Edwards, Mike Tubbs and John Hill. Honorary pallbearers are: Greg Martin, BoBo Peppers, Todd Solomon, Chris Ogden, Trey Eldridge, Lee Coston, Charles Dawson, Jimmy Doles, Melvin Richards, Sammy Ederington and Robert "Hoss" Hales. The family wishes to express their thanks to TruCare Home Health, Preimer Hospice and special caregivers, Donald Shaw and Rosalyn White. In lieu of flowers memorial contributions may be made to the building fund at Grace Baptist Church.
