Obituary of Alice Perry

Memorial graveside services for Mrs. Alice Virginia Hester Perry, 101, will be held at 10:30 a.m. Saturday, April 10, 2010 at Christ Church Cemetery with Rev. Mark Benge officiating under the direction of Golden Funeral Home. The family will receive friends from 6 p.m. until 8 p.m. Friday at the funeral home.
Mrs. Perry died after a brief illness on January 9, 2010, at the Benjamin M. Smith Health Care Center, Alexandria, VA. Born February 25, 1908 near Downsville, LA, Mrs. Perry was one of seven children raised on a small farm by their parents Walter and Curmeler Hester. She received degrees from Lousiana Tech and ULM (then Northeast State) and was a teacher by profession. In 1939 she married Onar Graves Perry in Bastrop. After living a few years in Mobile, AL, they returned to Bastrop following the outbreak of World War II. Resuming her teaching career in the early 1950's, she retired in 1973. An active and concerned member of her community, she participated in many civic and professional organizations and was very active in the First Methodist Church. After retirement, she especially enjoyed her work with the Hospital Auxiliary and the Louisiana Retired Teachers Organization. At the age of 99 she agreed to move to Virginia to live with her daughter and son-in-law Suzanne and Nelson Litsinger who survive her. She is also survived by two granddaughters, Deborah Litsinger-Jones (Lavell) and Alice Litsinger-Speert (Jon). She deeply loved her brothers and sisters and is survived by numerous nieces and nephews and their children and also by her many loving and caring friends. In accordance with her written wishes, Mrs. Perry was cremated. Anyone wishing to honor her memory can make a donation to the First United Methodist Church of Bastrop, The Crisis Ministry or to the charity of the donor's choice. A reception will be held following the graveside service at First United Methodist Church.
