Funeral services for Joseph A. Davenport, III will be held at 10:30 a.m. on October 11, 2010 at St. Andrews Episcopal Church in Mer Rouge, Louisiana with the Rev. Whit Stodghill officiating. Interment will follow in the Mer Rouge Cemetery under the direction of Golden Funeral Home of Bastrop. Visitation will be held Sunday, October 10, 2010 from 4:00 p.m. until 7:00 p.m. at the church.
Mr. Davenport was born on July 19, 1937 in Monroe, Louisiana, and died October 7, 2010 in Mer Rouge, Louisiana.
He was the son of Joseph Andrews Davenport, Jr. and Letitia Morgan Davenport. Mr. Davenport was a graduate of Mer Rouge High School. He attended The University of the South in Sewanee, Tennessee from 1955 - 1957 and received a B.A. Degree from Tulane University in New Orleans in 1959.
Mr. Davenport was a member of St. Andrews Episcopal Church, Mer Rouge, Louisiana. He was President of The Mer Rouge State Bank from 1971 - 1983, and Chief Executive Officer and Chairman of the Board from 1983 - present. Mr. Davenport also served as a member of the Board of Directors of The Mer Rouge State Bank. He was associated with his brother, William M. Davenport, in Davenport Brothers and Andrews-Morgan Farming Partnership.
At the Diocesan level, Mr. Davenport served for a number of years on The Commission on Ministry of the Diocese of Western Louisiana; on a National level he served on the Board for Theological Education of The Episcopal Church of The United States of America. Mr. Davenport served as Trustee of two Theological schools. Seabury-Western Seminary, Evanston, Illinois and The General Theological Seminary in New York City where he was honored with receiving The Clement Clarke Moore Award for his years of service, friendship and tireless advocacy to the Seminary.
Mr. Davenport is survived by his brother William M. Davenport and sister-in-law Leila S. Davenport of Mer Rouge; two nieces Leila Davenport Ross of Sullivan's Island, South Carolina, and Heather Davenport McCastlain of Little Rock, Arkansas.
Pallbearers will be: Allen Spires, Sam Spires, Gerald Farrar, John Shackelford, George Shackelford and Parks Shackelford.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorials be made to Saint Andrews Episcopal Church, c/o Mrs. Shelley Rankin, 501 Tulane, Bastrop, Louisiana 71220.
