Services for Mr. Herbert H. Dawkins, Jr., age 76, of Bastrop, LA will be held Tuesday, July 12, 2005 at 10:00 AM at First Baptist Church in Bastrop. Rev. Jim Ingram and Dr. L.H. McCollough will be officiating.
Mr. Dawkins died Saturday, July 9, 2005, at his home, in Bastrop, LA. He lived most of his life in Bastrop and graduated from Bastrop High School in 1946. Mr. Dawkins attended Northwestern State College in Natchitoches, LA and graduated in 1952. In 1956 he also received his Master's Degree from the University of Arkansas. Mr. Dawkins began his teaching career in Greenwood, LA in 1952. In 1956, he became principal of Houston Elementary School in Houston, MO. He retired from Morehouse Parish School system in 1990.
Mr. Dawkins was a member of First Baptist Church, a Shriner and served in the United States Army and was a veteran of the Korean War.
He was preceded in death by his parents Herbert H. Dawkins, Sr. and Edna Manning Dawkins.
Survivors include his wife of 53 years, Sue Talbert Dawkins; his daughter, Rhonda Melton and her husband, Dr. Glen Melton; two granddaughters, Erin Melton Klitzke and husband Kyle of Bastrop, and Rebecca Melton Edwards and her husband Jacob, of Walker, LA. He is also survived by his sister Kathlyn Bonsall and her husband James Bonsall; two nephews, Bobby Bonsall and Ronnie Bonsall of South Carolina and niece, Pam Hailey of Gilmer, TX.
Pallbearers will be Billy Beasley, Henry Jones, Sam Harris, John Davis, Bobby Bonsall, Wayne Young, and Mike Arrant. Honorary pallbearers will be Jerry Ball, Dick Revels, R.C. Anderson, Rudolph Tarver, James Bonsall, and Dr. Robert Lyon.
Memorials may be made to First Baptist Church, Shriner's Hospital in Shreveport, or the Morehouse Humane Society.
During thirty-eight dedicated years in public schools, Mr. Dawkins touched in a positive way so many young lives. There will always be a special place in the hearts of his family and friends for him and his precious memory.
