Obituary of Eldred H. Scoggins

Eldred H. Scoggins was born October 20, 1923 in Mangham, LA. He went to be with his Savior on September 30, 2012. He was a graduate of Bastrop High School and upon graduating, he enlisted in the United States Navy. He was a World War II veteran and served from 1943 to 1946. He was assigned to the USS Charleston Class PG51 gunboat and was stationed in the Aleutian Islands in the North Pacific. The USS Charleston reclaimed the Attu and Kiska Alaskan Islands from the Japanese. These two islands had been taken by the Japanese following the attack on Pearl Harbor. Mr. Scoggins was a loving husband, father, grandfather, and provider for his family and community. During his life he was a business owner, farmer, carpenter, deer hunter, and avid gardener. He was a lifelong member of Bartholomew United Methodist Church. He is preceded in death by his two mothers, Elsie Bishop Scoggins and Sadie Adcock Scoggins; his father, Louis Calvin Scoggins; a brother, Aubrey Scoggins; a sister, Margaret Scoggins Nolan; and son-in-law, Jerry Metz. Mr. Scoggins is survived by his loving wife of 62 years, Betty Jean Rea Scoggins; five daughters, Carolyn Goldenberg and husband Harris of Bastrop, LA, Rhonda Scoggins of Fairhope, AL, Jan Gray and husband Marvin of Brandon, MS, Anne Lane and husband Bubba of Rayville, LA, Staci Scoggins and fiance Chris Jones of Luna, LA; four sisters, Hazel Lambert of Bastrop, LA, Sybil Duncan and husband Al of Bastrop, LA, Nancy Sivils and husband Fred of Bastrop, LA, Sadie Faye Strahan of Marshal, TX; two brothers, Billy Scoggins and wife Jean of Oak Grove, LA, Jack Scoggins of Mer Rouge, LA; sixteen grandchildren; fifteen great grandchildren; and a multitude of nieces, nephews, and special friends. Funeral services are scheduled for 10 a.m. Wednesday, October 3, 2012 at the chapel of Golden Funeral Home with Rev. Clelie Stone officiating. Interment will follow in Bartholomew Cemetery. There will be a fellowship time with the family following the graveside services at the Bartholomew United Methodist Church fellowship hall. Visitation will be held Tuesday from 5-8 p.m. at Golden Funeral Home. Serving as pallbearers will be grandsons, Matt Scoggins Floyd, Malcolm Eppinette, Josh Johnson, Luke Childress, and friends, Sam Little, Dennis Kelly, and Junior Kinney. Honorary pallbearers are Dr. Carter Cox and Dr. Jacqueline Carter. The family has requested that in lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Bartholomew United Methodist Church or Cemetery.
