Though I learned of Dane's passing only today, I wanted to give my condolences to Aunt Claudette, Donna, David and all the family.
Dane was my hero when we were kids. He was the smartest, funniest and kindest kid I knew. He taught me about frogs, snakes and all kinds of animals. He showed me the electronics projects he would tinker with, even though they were way over my head. When "Dane-bo" would spend the occasional night at our house, he would improvise hilarious stories that kept me laughing way past my bedtime.
Just as importantly, he would listen to me, his younger cousin, when I talked about my ideas and enthusiasms. He would listen without judgment and he would respond thoughtfully and with imagination. He made me feel like I was just as smart and interesting as he was, and that sort of patience and generosity is rare in a young person.
