Mrs Elva McCann Humphreys, where shall I begin? I did not realize until today that she has passed away. I remember her sorrow of Mr. McCann getting killed in an accident. She would lay her head on her desk and cry. I now live in Mississippi and have no family in LA. or I would have paid my respects as I dearly loved her! I am now 70 yrs old. I always called her when I visited my Mom in LA but she has been deceased over 11 yrs. Elva McCann was my 4th-grade teacher in 1954 and again my 6th-grade teacher. I asked my Mother to please request her as my 6th grade teacher. We moved to LA from Iowa. I was not taught to say "yes mam", "please" nor "thank-you". In the North, that really didn't apply, so I often got a ruler on the palm of my hand until I learned correctly. She was the best teacher ever as she believed in manners & politeness. She took me under her wing and was so compassionate. She was determined to teach by rules, helping me adjust well to the way of the south. I lived two doors down from her apt. complex so she even let me visit her and meet her Leprechauns. I was naturally thrilled as she was not only compassionate, educationally fundamentally the best but also very strict. Later as Superintendant of Education I applied as a teacher's aide. She told me I must attend NLU and get the required requirements to become a teacher's aide to be hired. I always did what Mrs. McCann instructed as she knew best. In the fall I was hired and placed as a teacher's aide in Collinston. Without her instruction, I wouldn't have been adequately prepared. After teaching two years I landed a job in banking, furthered my education and later became an officer/Vice President before retiring in 2003. I stayed in contact with Mrs. McCann for a number of years as she always gave the best advice enabling me to work up in a banking career path.
I would like to say to you family members, you had an outstanding relative that I would have been proud to have called my own. Memories between families are treasures that we should keep deep within the storehouse of our souls, to keep our hearts warm when we are lonely. May GOD Bless each one of you Daily.

She was an inspiration to all. Her wonderful and gracious manner made her a woman of grace and beauty. Her accomplishments served as a role model for all young women. Although she is gone in her bodily form, her spirt and influence will remain in our hearts and community for years to come.
On a very personal note, I was
a forth grade student of Mrs. Elva's the year her first husband died. If I recall correctly it was an accident and a shock to everyone. The entire class mourned his death and cried each time Mrs. E shed a tear. We loved her very much.
I pray for all her family and many friends that they may be comforted by their faith and the knowledge that she lived a wonderful productive life, and was loved by all. Rest in peace.

Mrs. Humphreys used to visit Beekman School when I went there and she would always come into the lunch room and say "eat your peas", so since we didn't know her name, we would always say "here comes Mrs Eat-Your-Peas. That's the only name we knew for her. Imagine my surprise when years later I went to work at the Morehouse Parish School Board and she was working there! I finally learned what her real name was and she was a joy to work with. Take comfort that she is with Jesus now and the Angels in Heaven are rejoicing! I hope The Lord gives you comfort and peace during this time.

Dear Mrs. McCann was a major influence in my life. She offered me unconditional love and saw the best in me. Her eighth grade class, with its sunshine bottles and, "little people" who had just disappeared behind the bookshelves made life at school fun. I learned to debate from her. She brought out the magical child in us and yet treated us with so much respect, almost like equals.
So importantly she saw the writer in me and nurtured it. When I began to publish, she was my biggest fan.
Mrs.McCann, I love you. You were one in a million. May I give to others a bit of what you gave me. You were the very best.
With love...Lyn Holley

I have never known a lovelier woman. Though I rarely have occasion to return to Louisiana from my Wyoming home, I am so glad that I was able to spend a happy hour visiting with Elva on my last trip, in January 2016, and to be able to tell her how much I love her. I will miss her terribly.
