Obituary of Odell Johnson

Odell Johnson went to his heavenly home at the age of 93 on February 21, 2023. He was born on November 20, 1929, in Oak Grove, LA. Funeral services are scheduled for 10am, Saturday, February 25, 2023, at New Hope Baptist Church in Jones, LA with Rev. Gary Traylor officiating and assisted by Rev. Danny Hawthorne. Interment will follow at New Hope Baptist Church Cemetery under the direction of Golden Funeral Home of Bastrop. Mr. Johnson was preceded in death by his wife of over 70 years Mary Katherine Johnson; his parents, Oliver and Pearl Johnson; brothers T.J. and R.L. Johnson; sister Geraldine Perry. Mr. Johnson was a devoted husband, father and grandfather. He spent most of his life in Jones, LA where he farmed. One of the highlights of his farming career was winning the contest for ginning the first bale of cotton grown for the season in Morehouse Parish. His hobbies included fishing, raising cattle and horseback riding. He was a member of the New Hope Baptist Church serving many years as Deacon and Sunday School teacher until relocating to Bastrop. The family would especially like to thank the dedicated members of the church who for so many years provided transportation for our parents to attend church services during their later years. Mr. Johnson is survived by his sons, Laverne and wife Carolyn of Bastrop, Earnest and wife Becky of Little Rock, AR, and Larry and wife Ginger of Monroe, LA; grandchildren, Jerromy Johnson, Amy Johnson, Jami Johnson, Jennifer Porter, Jeff Johnson and Joanna McDuffie; nine great grandchildren and one great great grandchild; sisters Ruby Eppinette and Joyce Dartlon and many loving nieces and nephews. Pallbearers will be Jeff Johnson, Jerromy Johnson, Barnett McDuffie, Luke Porter, Andy Porter, Jake Porter, Derl Johnson, Greg Sadler. Honorary pallbearers will be the men of New Hope Baptist Church. The family would like to thank the staff of Lagniappe Health Care of Bastrop for their excellent care. Visitation will be from 5pm to 7pm on February 24, 2023, at Golden Funeral Home in Bastrop.
