Darrell was born on November 22, 1941 in Bastrop, Louisiana. At his birth, his family lived in Jones, La. While in Jones, the family attended church at Victory Baptist Church on the Bonita Road. Later, his parents moved the family to Bastrop and they joined Central Missionary Baptist Church. Darrell would live most of his life in Bastrop where he worked at the Post Office. He retired from the Post Office in Bastrop after thirty-one years of service. Darrell then went into business for himself and purchased a franchise of White’s Distributing Company, owned by his brother, Ed. Darrell married Elizabeth Elaine Cockrell in 1960 and they were married for 47 years when she passed away in 2008. Darrell later married his high school friend, Carol Sue Loche Wallace and moved to Monticello, Ark and became a member of Pauline Missionary Baptist Church where he was ordained as a Deacon. His 2nd wife, Carol Sue, passed away suddenly in 2012. Later, Darrell met and married Lucille Walthall Kennedy and they became members of Horseshoe Baptist Church, where he served as the music minister and then they later moved back to Bastrop and joined Central Missionary Baptist. Darrell and Lucille were married for 10 yrs at the time of his death.
Darrell loved his country and served in the United States Army from 1959-1962. Throughout his life, Darrell loved fishing, gardening, and traveling. He was a sports fan and loved NASCAR racing. He was an incredible craftsman and could build practically anything! In his early life, Darrell and Elaine served their community in the Bastrop Jaycee’s. Above all, Darrell loved his Lord and Savior and touched many lives doing the Lord’s work. He was always involved in church activities, from leading music, singing in the choir, working with the youth, participating in the Live Nativity at Central, and serving his Deacon families at Pauline. Darrell had a love for music and did not let his talent that the Lord blessed him with go to waste. He could not play musical instruments, but he did not have to because he owned one of the most beautiful instruments that God created, his voice. Darrell sang for many occasions and was a member of the White Quartet, which consisted of his brothers, Ed and Jimmy, his sister, Mickey and their pianist, Elaine. Together they traveled and touched many lives with their joyful spirits and songs!
Darrell was a loving husband, father, grandfather, great grandfather, and brother. He was a very giving person that loved his family and friends. From attending ball games, coaching teams, attending band concerts and school functions, to helping with school projects, he was always there for his family. He will be dearly missed by all those who knew him!
