I had the good fortune to know Dave for almost thirty years, from his days at the University of Houston. I’m not capable of writing anything worthy of him, but will add a few thoughts and reminisces …
I remember talking with Dave a few years ago. I think we were driving somewhere. Both of us having reached middle age, we started on about how our lives had gone up until then. From what I remember, he was, on the whole, pretty satisfied with his decisions; specifically, that he’d traveled widely while he was young enough to enjoy it (and travel widely he had); and, more generally, I think, that he’d pretty much marched to his own tune. Dave was a true independent. For as long as I knew him, he knew exactly what he was about.
That made him the guy you always wanted to float ideas or decisions by first. He had integrity.
Besides, he was a heck of lot of fun to talk to. He had a variety of natural gifts and interests (for art, literature, music, philosophy, history, firearms, computers) that you don’t normally find combined in one person. He never tried his hand at poetry, as far as I know (that wouldn’t have fit his style), but he was creative on almost every other front.
He was a particularly gifted writer and, among other things, wrote a series of compelling movie reviews for a blog that the two of us ran for a few years. Of course, with Dave, a movie review wasn’t just a movie review. It was a combination movie review, history lesson, analysis of the director’s other works and so forth. As I say, the man had a variety of gifts; and they were all brought to bear on whatever he was doing.
Dave could be a bit of a perfectionist. This occasionally reached comic proportions, as when in one instance during our music recording sessions, we spent the lion’s share of our available time positioning microphones, setting up mixers etc. (to be fair I may have contributed to the madness as well). To borrow a phrase, Dave gave an entirely new meaning to “attention to detail.” We both laughed about it. It’s just who he was.
Speaking of comic proportions, he was also falling-down-on-the-floor-laughing, professional-comedian-level, uproariously, funny. Funniest person I’ve ever met personally.
It’s still hard to believe Dave’s gone. Every time I talked him he was starting a new project, learning a new skill, always moving forward. His loss at this time was a great shock to me as well as to his family and loved ones. Having given it a little time to sink in, you start to realize how lucky you were to have known him. He was a good guy and the best friend I’ll ever have.
My condolences to his family and loved ones.

My sincere condolences to the family and friends of Mr. McCarty for your loss. No doubt he lived a full life and you will miss him dearly. Hopefully you can draw comfort from Gods word, as I have, where He promises us that there is going to be a resurrection and that we can be reunited with our loved ones again - right here on the earth. (John 5:28,29; Psalms 37:9,10) If you’d like to find more encouragement from Gods word, and his plan for our future, please visit the Bible based website - jw.org.

I was only fortunate enough to know David a short time. As Dave said, you either get me or you don’t.” I got Dave and he was a lovely, talented and compassionate person. I am thankful for that time I had and Dave will be very missed by many.

Dave and I worked together the last three years at Dallas County. He was very smart and I enjoyed talking to him about our shared interests. Some people would say he was reserved at work but you just had to get to know Dave to know how funny he was. I enjoyed hearing about his life stories and how he told them. Dave was very articulate and he could really make any story interstesting. I am a better person for knowing Dave. He took the time to listen to you and he would give great advice. My condolences to his entire family and all his friends.
Sincerely,
Rolando Chavarria
