Martha Burns Colvin, a lifelong educator and a resident of Bastrop, LA, went to be with her Heavenly Father on April 16, 2020 after an aggressive battle with Dementia. She was born December 6, 1949 in Union, MS. Martha’s beautiful life will be forever cherished by her family. She is survived by Gene Colvin; daughter, Nicole Meyers and husband Mark; grandson Grayson Gillies; daughter, Kari Colvin and fiancé Lee Evans; granddaughter, Madison Colvin; sisters-in-law, Betty Burns, Sylvia Burns; and many nieces, nephews, great-nieces, great-nephews, cousins and friends. She is preceded in death by her parents, Paul and Rethia Burns; brothers, Kip Burns, Kenny Burns; step-son, Steve Colvin ; and many aunts, uncles and cousins. Martha graduated with a degree in English Education from Southern Mississippi University and furthered her love of teaching with a Master’s of Education from Northeast Louisiana University. After teaching English, Drama, and Speech for years she found her true passion in Special Education. She worked throughout the state of Louisiana and made her mark with every special needs child and parent she helped. After becoming a supervisor Martha continued to help in all aspects of Special Education, wearing many hats as she molded and mentored other educators on the needs of the children. Later in life Martha enjoyed tutoring ADHD children and sharing her love of Jesus by teaching others through Sunday School and Bible studies. Martha will always be remembered for her devotion to education, her passion for the Lord, and her love for her family. Due to the circumstances regarding COVID-19, the family has elected to celebrate Martha with a memorial service to be determined at a later date. Information will be updated and shared once arrangements can be made. Memorial contributions may be made to a charity of your choice in the memory of Martha Burns Colvin.
